Privacy Statement

Naija News Feeds (“we”, “us”) publishes news and aggregated headlines at usf.naijanewsfeeds.com. This statement explains what personal data we collect when you visit, why, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have.

The short version

You can read this site without giving us your name. You do give us something automatically: we use Google Analytics and a Meta (Facebook) Pixel, which record your visit — including your IP address — and share it with those companies. We do not sell your data, and we do not currently display advertising. Sections 3 and 6 below tell you how to turn the tracking off.

1. Who is responsible for your data

Naija News Feeds is the data controller for the personal data described here — we decide why and how it is processed. You can reach us about anything on this page at info@usf.naijanewsfeeds.com.

2. What we collect

Information you choose to give us

• Comments. The name, email address and any website you enter in the comment form, plus your IP address and browser user-agent string (used to detect spam). Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely so that follow-up comments from you can be approved automatically.
• Newsletter and on-site sign-up forms. If you subscribe, we collect the email address you submit. Sign-up forms are powered by OptinMonster and delivery is handled by Brevo.
• Account details. If you register, we store the information in your user profile. You can view, edit or delete it at any time (the username cannot be changed).
• Email you send us. Kept for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.

Information collected automatically

• Analytics data. Pages viewed, time on page, referring site, approximate location, device, browser and operating system, and your IP address.
• Demographic and interest data. Google Analytics’ demographics and interests reporting (Google Signals) is currently enabled, so Google may associate your visit with age, gender and interest categories it holds about you, and may use it for remarketing audiences.
• Server logs. Our host records requests, IP addresses and user agents for security and abuse detection.

Please note: we do not currently anonymise or truncate your IP address before it reaches Google Analytics. Your full IP address is transmitted to Google.

3. Analytics, measurement and advertising technology

These third-party services run on this site today. Each one receives data about your visit directly from your browser, and each is an independent controller of the data it receives, under its own privacy policy.

Advertising. We do not currently display advertising on this site, and we do not sell or rent your personal data to anyone. The Meta Pixel and Google Signals described above are nonetheless advertising-related technologies, which is why they are disclosed here. If we introduce advertising, we will update this statement before any ad units go live.

Embedded content. Articles may embed material from other sites (video, images, social posts). Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited that other site: it can set cookies, embed further tracking, and monitor your interaction with it.

4. Cookies

• Analytics and measurement cookies set by the services in section 3. These are not essential to the site working.
• Comment cookies. If you leave a comment you may opt in to saving your name, email and website so you need not re-enter them. These last one year.
• Login and editing cookies. Only if you have an account: a session-test cookie on the login page, login cookies lasting two days (two weeks with “Remember Me”), screen-option cookies lasting a year, and a one-day cookie recording the post ID you last edited. These contain no data about readers who do not log in.
• Performance and caching cookies used by our host to serve pages quickly.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking non-essential cookies will not stop you reading the site.

5. Our legal basis for using your data

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 (NDPA) and the NDPC’s General Application and Implementation Directive 2025 (GAID), and — for readers in the EEA and UK — the GDPR, we rely on:

• Consent — for analytics, measurement and advertising technologies, and for newsletter sign-up. You may withdraw consent at any time; withdrawing it is as easy as giving it, and does not affect processing already carried out.
• Legitimate interests — for security, spam prevention and keeping the site running.
• Legal obligation — where the law requires us to retain or disclose information.

We want to be straightforward with you about where we currently fall short. GAID Article 19 requires opt-in consent before non-essential cookies and tracking are set. This site does not yet present a consent banner, so the analytics and pixel technologies in section 3 currently load when you arrive, without asking you first. We are implementing a consent mechanism, and this statement will be updated when it is in place. Until then, section 6 sets out how to opt out yourself, and those opt-outs work now.

6. How to opt out

• Google Analytics: install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, which blocks it on every site you visit.
• Google demographics and remarketing: turn off personalisation at My Ad Center.
• Meta Pixel: adjust your advertising settings at Meta Accounts Center; off-Facebook activity controls limit how this data is linked to you.
• All of the above at once: block third-party cookies and scripts in your browser, use a tracker-blocking extension, or enable your browser’s tracking-protection or “Do Not Track” setting.
• Newsletter: every email has an unsubscribe link, or write to info@usf.naijanewsfeeds.com.

7. Who we share data with

• The service providers listed in section 3, plus our hosting provider (Hostinger) and our email provider (Brevo).
• If you request a password reset, your IP address is included in the reset email.
• Comments may be checked by an automated spam-detection service.
• Where we are legally required to disclose it, or need to in order to protect our rights or the safety of others.

We do not sell your personal data.

8. International transfers

Our servers and several of our providers are outside Nigeria, so your data is transferred abroad — including to the United States and the European Union. Under section 41 of the NDPA such transfers require an adequate legal basis; we rely on the recipients’ own transfer safeguards (such as the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses) and, for analytics and pixel technologies, on your consent.

9. How long we keep data

• Comments and their metadata: indefinitely, unless you ask us to erase them.
• Account profiles: until you delete the account.
• Newsletter subscriptions: until you unsubscribe.
• Analytics data: retained by Google under its own schedule (currently up to 14 months for user-level data).
• Server logs: a short rolling window set by our host.

10. Your rights

Under the NDPA — and the GDPR if you are in the EEA or UK — you have the right to:

• be told what personal data we hold about you, and get a copy of it;
• have inaccurate data corrected;
• have your data erased;
• restrict or object to how we use it, including objecting to profiling;
• receive your data in a portable format;
• withdraw consent at any time;
• complain to a regulator (section 12).

To exercise any of these, email info@usf.naijanewsfeeds.com. We will respond within 30 days. We may need to verify your identity first. There is no charge unless a request is manifestly unfounded or excessive.

11. Children

This site is intended for a general adult audience. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 18. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

12. Complaints

Please raise concerns with us first at info@usf.naijanewsfeeds.com — we would rather fix it. You also have the right to complain directly to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) at ndpc.gov.ng. Readers in the EEA or UK may complain to their national data protection authority.

13. Security

We serve this site over HTTPS and take reasonable technical measures to protect data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

14. Media

If you upload images to this site, avoid images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) — visitors can download them and extract that location data.

15. Changes

We will update this statement when our practices change, and always before introducing a materially new use of your data — such as advertising. The date at the top shows the current version.
